How to Prepare for Your Nevada Online Notary Appointment
Remote Online Notarization gives you a convenient way to have a document notarized without traveling to a notary’s office. You meet with the notary through a secure online platform, complete identity verification, and sign the document during a live video session.
As a Nevada online notary with more than 2,000 completed remote notarizations, I have found that most appointments go smoothly when the signer knows what to expect and prepares a few things in advance.
Wait Before Signing Your Document
Unless you have received specific instructions stating otherwise, do not sign the document before meeting with the notary.
Depending on the required notarial act, I may need to watch you sign, administer an oath or affirmation, or have you acknowledge a signature during the live session. Signing too early could require you to obtain a new copy of the document.
Have Your Identification Ready
Nevada Remote Online Notarization requires identification containing both a photograph and a signature. A driver’s license, state identification card, or passport is commonly used.
Although Nevada may permit certain expired identification, current, unexpired identification is strongly preferred whenever possible. The online platform may also have its own identity-verification requirements.
Keep your identification nearby so you can display it clearly when requested.
Prepare Your Device and Internet Connection
A computer or tablet usually provides the easiest experience. Some platforms also support smartphones, but a larger screen may make it easier to review and sign your document.
Before the appointment, confirm that your device has:
- A working camera
- A working microphone and speakers
- A reliable internet connection
- Access to your email or text messages
- An updated internet browser
Google Chrome is generally the preferred browser for online notarization platforms.
Choose a Suitable Location
Join the appointment from a quiet, private, and well-lit location. Your face and identification must be clearly visible, and we must be able to hear one another throughout the session.
Do not attempt to complete the notarization while driving. You should be seated and able to give the document and notarization your full attention.
Tell Me Where You Will Be Physically Located
Your physical location during the appointment is important, even though the notary meeting occurs online.
A Nevada online notary may often assist a signer located outside Nevada, but the signer’s location, document, and intended use must be reviewed. If you will be traveling or located outside the United States, please provide that information before scheduling.
Identify Other Participants in Advance
Let me know if:
- More than one person must sign
- Signers will be joining from different locations
- The document requires witnesses
- A signer needs language assistance
- Someone else expects to be present during the session
Witnesses may have to meet eligibility and identity-verification requirements. Providing advance notice allows enough time to coordinate everyone properly.
Review Your Appointment Instructions
Your confirmation email or text may include an appointment link, identification instructions, technology requirements, and identity-verification steps.
Read those instructions before joining and allow approximately 10 to 15 minutes beforehand to complete any required setup. Beginning early is especially helpful when multiple signers or witnesses are involved.
A Little Preparation Makes a Big Difference
Remote Online Notarization should be convenient, secure, and understandable. Having your identification, device, location, and participants ready helps prevent delays and keeps the appointment focused on completing your notarization correctly.
